Fans of Mos Def, Fela Kuti, Gil Scott-Heron and Saul Williams listen up –
Anthony Joseph & The Spasm Band have landed. Mark Midsummer Night with
voodoo lore, intoxicating calypso and naked island funk. To celebrate the
launch of his new album Leggo de Lion (Kindred Spirits), acclaimed poet and
performer Anthony Joseph brings his five-piece band to London for a night of
‘Wild Island Jazz’. The Spasm Band create a sound infused with Trinidadian
Spiritual Baptist rhythms, deep, hypnotic basslines, jagged sax and heavy
hand percussion – this is music made to cause possession spasms…

In support: acclaimed young saxophonist/clarinetist Shabaka Hutchings and
his band Splay. Shabaka is a protégé of Soweto Kinch and Dune Records and
plays regularly with Tomorrow’s Warriors and Abram Wilson. Plus offbeat
jazz, funk and hip-hop from multitalented DJ Zak Akhimien.

Dubbed ‘the leader of the Black British avant-garde’, Anthony Joseph is
author of The African Origins of UFOs (Salt), whose fans include Kamau
Brathwaite and Linton Kwesi Johnson. His unique brand of ‘liquid textology’
fuses myth, metafiction and Afrofuturism. Joseph has appeared on BBC Radio
3, Radio 4 and toured extensively in the UK, US and Europe.
