The event will be hosted by Montreal anglophone poet Todd Swift - now living in London - who will also read from his newest book, Seaway. Two-time Governor General's Award winner Nicole Brossard will read excerpts from her novels and poetry, including Yesterday, at the Hotel Clarendon and Notebook of Roses and Civilization. Audience members are encouraged to bring their questions for the Q&A session that will follow the readings, and to purchase books for signing. The event will be followed by a book signing session.

Critically-lauded writer Bernardine Evaristo specialises in blurring the line between prose and poetry. Her 2008 novel-in-prose, Blonde Roots, has been turning critics' heads with its all-too-real visualisation of a reversed slave-trade, all steeped in the author's trademark wit. Tonight she presents a genre-defying selection of her work.
And speaking of roots, we've also got drumtastic spoken-wordster HKB FiNN on the bill. Well-known for the 'alternative hip-hop' he cooks up from elements of jazzy Afro-reggae, he won almost universally rave reviews for his recent album Light in the Shade of Darkness. Come and see the man behind the music.
Denise Saul is no stranger to popular acclaim either: her White Narcissi collection was the Poetry Book Society's featured pamphlet in the winter of 2007. A virtuoso of subtle, well-crafted imagery, she's sure to go from strength to strength. Watch this space.
Bohdan Piasecki, meanwhile, is not yet a household name, though he should be soon. The man who introduced poetry slams to Poland, he's now gobsmacking audiences around the rest of Europe with his incisive, economical material and his personable onstage style.

Maureen Ryan has lived most of her adult life in Galway. She has published two novels and over 400 academic papers, essays, sermons, meditations and reflections. She is a psychologist, a Priest in the Church of Ireland and a Canon in the National Cathedral of St. Patrick’s, Dublin. She recently gave up a well paid job as a religious columnist to make her fortune writing poetry. To that end she is taking classes with Susan Millar DuMars and Kevin Higgins. She is preparing a book for Columba Press and a collection of short stories titled ‘Marchpane Smiles’.
Dave Rock is a Scottish-Lithuanian-Irish-English something or other. He has been writing since he was seven years old. His work has been published in journals such as The Shop, Revival, Foiseach and The Old Yellow Lantern. He won the GYT/Bank of Ireland One Act Play Festival Best New Writing Award. He has been a featured reader at many different venues, including the Whitehouse, the Electric Picnic and Dun Laoghaire Festival of World Cultures. He is a former Auditor of the Writers Society of NUIG. His first collection of poetry is published soon by Maverick Press.
Marck Beggs is a professor and graduate dean at Henderson State University, Arkansas. When he is not writing poems or singing his quasi-folk songs, he can sometimes be found watching the weeds proliferate in his garden as he daydreams of fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, and butternut squash. Needless to say, he cites Whitman as a major influence. He is the author of Catastrophic Chords (Salmon, 2008), Libido Café (Salmon, 2004) and Godworm (1995). His folk-rock band, dog gods, released their debut CD in 2008 (www.cdbaby.com/doggodsmusic).
As usual there will be an open-mic after the Featured Readers have finished. New readers are always most welcome. The MC for the evening will be Susan Millar DuMars. For further details phone 087-6431748.

This month is a special month at Poets’ Café because our special guest is one of our own. Regular and superb supporter Wendy Klein is giving us a special reading from her brand new first collection, Cuba In The Blood (Cinnamon Press, 2009), and since she’s popular, local and a stern taskmaster I suspect this will be a very much jam-packed night of poetry. We have ordered extra chairs specially, but you might want to book your ticket in advance to make sure you get in. There is, of course, as much open mic as usual.

GALWAY: Over The Edge Open Reading

Featured readers are Maureen Ryan, Dave Rock and Marck Beggs.
Maureen Ryan has lived most of her adult life in Galway. She has published two novels and over 400 academic papers, essays, sermons, meditations and reflections. She is a psychologist, a Priest in the Church of Ireland and a Canon in the National Cathedral of St. Patrick’s, Dublin. She recently gave up a well paid job as a religious columnist to make her fortune writing poetry. To that end she is taking classes with Susan Millar DuMars and Kevin Higgins. She is preparing a book for Columba Press and a collection of short stories titled ‘Marchpane Smiles’.
Dave Rock is a Scottish-Lithuanian-Irish-English something or other. He has been writing since he was seven years old. His work has been published in journals such as The Shop, Revival, Foiseach and The Old Yellow Lantern. He won the GYT/Bank of Ireland One Act Play Festival Best New Writing Award. He has been a featured reader at many different venues, including the Whitehouse, the Electric Picnic and Dun Laoghaire Festival of World Cultures. He is a former Auditor of the Writers Society of NUIG. His first collection of poetry is published soon by Maverick Press.
Marck Beggs is a professor and graduate dean at Henderson State University, Arkansas. When he is not writing poems or singing his quasi-folk songs, he can sometimes be found watching the weeds proliferate in his garden as he daydreams of fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, and butternut squash. Needless to say, he cites Whitman as a major influence. He is the author of Catastrophic Chords (Salmon, 2008), Libido Café (Salmon, 2004) and Godworm (1995). His folk-rock band, dog gods, released their debut CD in 2008 (www.cdbaby.com/doggodsmusic).
