Manchester Irish Festival presents POETS ON CRAIC

When four of Manchester's best loved performance poets, all of Irish descent, come together for two very special poetry events, you can be sure that there'll be laughter and tears, truth and beauty in down-to-earth poetry of the highest order. Between them Mike Garry, Jackie Hagan, Steve O'Connor and Tony Walsh have taken their acclaimed word-smithery all over the UK, around Ireland and beyond. To catch them all on the same bill promises to be a rare treat. Bring a friend - sure, the craic will be ninety!

ZENA EDWARDS is well-known as a poet, storyteller and musician and tonight she's teamed up a crew of class A musicians and spoken word artists who'll be taking it to the bridge and beyond. Featuring jazz-rap hero SOWETO KINCH and East London's favourite poet ADISA alongside fast-lane verbal talents LEETO THALE and LUCID. Thirty years have passed since the UK's first dub poetry hit the racks, and its exponents are now amongst the elder statespeople of spoken-word. None more so than Jean 'Binta' Breeze, who tonight demonstrates her command of those elusive rhythms and her ability to flit from street wisdom to historical fiction in the blink of an eye: two talents showcased in her most recent book, The Fifth Figure.

There'll be ample support from Niall O'Sullivan, contributing his own brand of municipal zen with tales of greasy-spoon cafés and council flower-beds;and Saran Green, who'll be whipping up a saucy, spoken medley of boy-girlintrigue and Caribbean seasoning. Meanwhile, Malika Booker temporarily swaps from being London's hardest-working poet to being London's hardest-working compere.

Rising star of the spoken word scene, Polarbear premieres his first full-length one-man show - If I Cover My Nose You Can't See Me. It fuses live artwork and visuals in a unique event, and will take over The Front Room after the show. Polarbear's poetry tells a 21st century story of a 28-year-old man stuck in a dead end job; and an 11-year-old boy looking for answers. What happens when things change and what do we do in response?
