Scott Thurston's most recent book is Hold (Shearsman, 2006). He lectures in English Literature and Creative Writing at the University of Salford and has published on Allen Fisher, Adrian Clarke, John Wilkinson, Maggie O’Sullivan, Ulli Freer, Ira Lightman, Geraldine Monk and Tony Lopez. He edits The Radiator, a little magazine of poetry and poetics, and recently edited The Salt Companion to Geraldine Monk. See his pages at Archive of the Now. A new sequence of ninety poems called Momentum, is out now with Shearsman.
Tony Trehy is an international curator and writer and Director of the Text Festival. Publications include Text, Vertigo, 50 Heads and Reykjavik. She is the author of Wrack (Reality Street Editions, 2007), brass, running (Equipage, 2006), and alphabetise, a book of prose chronicles exhibited in the Text Festival at the Museum of Art, Bury, Manchester in 2005, now an eBook (Intercapillary Editions). LONDON: Hammer and Tongue Open Poetry Slam
Monday, December 1st, 2008, 8pm-11pm, £5/£4
Green Note Café,
106 Parkway,
Camden,
London
NW1 7AN
Hammer and Tongue's last London outing of 2008 brings you the best of slam poetry with an open competition and very special guest, nine time slam winner and festival regular, Byron Vincent.
Byron was (poorly) educated in the cloying conurbation of various northern sink estates. His flowery name and love of language ensured that his journey was a challenging one. Never a defeatist, he fought back with poetry. This was a terrible strategy and he regularly got his head kicked in. He has performed at venues as diverse as London's Whitechapel Gallery and Shambala Festival's Bedouin Tent and will be joining a cabal of very special guests at Camden's Green Note café.
London's newest, shiniest and feistiest open slam is open to all and the first 8 poets to sign up for the slam on the door will compete. Winners will go through to the London final next year and win a place in Hammer and Tongue's UK final, pitted against the finest slammers from Oxford and Brighton.
TO SLAM: Sign up at the door from 7.30pm.

LONDON: Hammer & Tongue Open Poetry Slam
Monday December 1st, 2008, 8pm-11pm, £5/£4
Green Note Café,
106 Parkway,
Camden,
NW1 7AN
Hammer and Tongue's last London outing of 2008 brings you the best of slam poetry with an open competition and very special guest, nine time slam winner and festival regular, Byron Vincent.
Byron was (poorly) educated in the cloying conurbation of various northern sink estates. His flowery name and love of language ensured that his journey was a challenging one. Never a defeatist, he fought back with poetry. This was a terrible strategy and he regularly got his head kicked in. Byron has performed at venues as diverse as London's Whitechapel Gallery and Shambala Festival's Bedouin Tent and will be joining a cabal of very special guests at Camden's Green Note café on the 1st.
London's newest, shiniest and feistiest open slam is open to all and the first 8 poets to sign up for the slam on door from 7.30 will compete. Get there early! Winners will go through to the London final next year and win a place in Hammer and Tongue's UK final, pitted against the finest slammers from Oxford and Brighton and then…. on to international stardom.
TO SLAM: Sign up at the door from 7.30, call Michelle on 07809 236 133.

GALWAY: Over The Edge
Thursday, November 20th, 2008, 6.30pm-8pm, FREE
Galway City Library,
St. Augustine Street,
Galway
Leading poet-critic John Goodby is reading at November's Over The Edge. Other featured readers are Elizabeth Power and Gordon Hewitt.
Elizabeth Power was born in East Cork but now calls Galway home. She completed an MA in Writing at NUIG in 2007. Her poetry has appeared in a wide variety of magazines, including Crannóg, Force 10 and Tribes ‘n Vibes. Elizabeth’s work also featured in the anthology Writers Seeking Lovers. Currently she works as a librarian and is writing a novel about a time travelling witch.
Gordon Hewitt initiated the Belfast Poets Touring Group, a group of performance poets who toured Ireland, the US, New Zealand and Australia in 2006 & 2007. The group, now known as Scream Blue Murmur, performed recently in Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, and at the Electric Picnic. Gordon is active in di-Verse (Poets against Racism) which oversees the annual Love Poetry Hate Racism event which is held in over 60 cities worldwide each April. Gordon’s style is a unique blend of spoken word, performance poetry, song and chant.
John Goodby is a poet and translator who lectures at the University of Swansea. His poetry has been described by Sean O'Brien as ‘bold and sensuous ... it reads like a chowder of names laced with methedrine ... at once lush and abrasive.’ He has translated Heine's Germany: A Winter’s Tale (2005), the contemporary Algerian poet Soleiman Adel Guemar, and is currently translating the work of Pier Paolo Pasolini. Among his latest publications are the first anthology of translations of Irish women poets into Spanish, No Soy Tu Musa and uncaged sea (2008), a cut-up version of the Collected Poems of Dylan Thomas. He is the author of the influential Irish Poetry Since 1950: From Stillness into History (Manchester University Press) and founder of Wales’s only poetry performance group, Boiled String.
As usual there will be an open-mic when the Featured Readers have finished. This is open to anyone who has a poem or story to share. New readers are always especially welcome. For further details phone 087-6431748.

To book please call Glasgow Science Centre on 0871 540 1000.
The lines are open 9-5 on weekdays and 10-3 at weekends

Stars are the focal point of many written works, from nursery rhymes and fairy tales to film and books. Glasgow Science Centre is celebrating the celestial presence in the written word by holding a poetry reading in the Scottish Power Planetarium.
Poets Liz Lochhead and Jim Carruth and the astronomy staff at the Glasgow Science Centre will host a compelling mix of poetry and science as they travel through time and space to pick and read their all time favourite star poems.
The setting of the ScottishPower Planetarium will offer guests the chance to see a night sky as it should be seen, with thousands of points of light above them. Most city-dwellers have never seen a clear night sky, as light pollution is now a serious problem throughout the Western world.
Visitors to the Written in the Stars event will be able to hear the star themed poetry whilst relaxing under the the twinkling night sky in one of the finest planetaria in the world.

LONDON: Apples & Snakes, featuring Murray Lachlan Young
Wednesday, November 26th, 2008, £8/£6
Soho Theatre,
21 Dean Street,
London
W1D 3NE
APPLES & SNAKES IN SOHO - Rogue spoken word and maverick poetry
To some, he will always be the poet who signed a £1m record deal with EMI. Others will recall him as the Britpop Lord Byron who kept popping up on MTV and supporting the Pet Shop Boys. We're happy to report, though, that Murray Lachlan Young is well and truly back. Not only that, but winning new fans with his reassuringly daft children's shows and his snappy stints as resident rhymer on Radio 4's Saturday Live. So if you want to see the man who's scaled heights that most poets can only dream of, better book a ticket post-haste.
Stacy Makishi is another artist who's constantly exploring new areas – in her case, the uncharted corners of her own mind. In Stacy's world, the spoken word is as stretchy as the pair of tights she utilises on stage to such good effect. And once you've seen her, you'll never look at a Brussels sprout in the same way again. Joining Murray and Stacy will be the footstompingly feisty Chanje Kunda, with her upfront mix of poetry and hip-hop beats. Socially committed and hard to ignore, Chanje is so feelgood that you'll just want to take her home and stick her on your hi-fi. And if she's remembered her CDs, you can do just that.
With compere Joshua Idehen manning the mic, it looks like being London's liveliest night this side of New Year's Eve.

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008, 2.30pm, FREE
The Whitworth Art Gallery,
Oxford Road,
Manchester
M15 6ER
Alicia Stubbersfield will be joined by newer poets Annie Clarkson, Gavin Hudson and Janette Stowell in another of our wonderful afternoons at the Whitworth in the south gallery. This combination of poetry and music (including, for the first time, Rhian Evans on harp) promises to be a truly sublime event.
POETS
Alicia Stubbersfield has published three collections of poetry to excellent reviews, the most recent being Joking Apart (The Collective Press 2006). After seventeen years away from the north-west she has come home to lecture in creative writing at Liverpool John Moores University.
Annie Clarkson is a poet and short story writer living in Manchester. Her first chapbook of prose poems Winter Hands was published by Shadow Train Books in 2007. She recently worked with artist Gemma Lacey on a handmade book. Her short story Lindy published in Brace (Comma Press) is being made into a short film by filmmaker Vera Juliusdottir.
Gavin Hudson is a young poet from Sheffield. His poems have appeared in Fire, Avocado and Cadaverine magazines; his reviews in Roundtable Review and PN Review. He works full-time co-ordinating a victim awareness programme for adult offenders across South Yorkshire.
Janette Stowell lives in Liverpool where she teaches Creative Writing at John Moores University and on the Continuing Education Programme at Liverpool University. Her first full collection of poetry The Midnight Horror Tree will be launched at the end of November by Headland.
MUSICIANS
Chris Davies is a freelance performer, musician and composer based in Manchester. Most of his commissioned work is with theatre and dance. He has worked with Poets and Players as Musical Director since its beginning in 2004.
Rhian Evans, a recipient of the 2008 Oglesby Bursary, is currently in her second postgraduate year at the RNCM. She has been awarded several harp scholarships enabling her to pursue her musical studies. She was Principal Harpist with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, South Africa.

Ziba Kirbassi (Persia)
Sophie Robinson (the most exotic of them all – Old Blighty!))
Frances Kruk lives in London in the presence of cats, moss, glue, scissors, oil pastels, and dark chocolate, all of which make for an unspeakable atrocity. She does not write real poetry.
The Nigerian German writer and performer Olumide Popoola has performed her poetry internationally, collaborating with many different artists and musicians. Currently studying for a MA in (creative) writing, she won the May Ayim Award for Poetry in Germany 2004 and has seen her work published in anthologies, journals and newspapers as well as featured on radio and documentaries.
Valeria Melchioretto is a London-based artist and award-winning writer. Her poems have appeared in many prestigious magazines and anthologies. The End of Limbo is her first full collection, for which she received a bursary from the Arts Council. It was published by Salt in 2007. In 2008 she became a Hawthonden Fellow.
Ziba Kirbassi is a rara avis. Seen only sometimes for short periods of time if you are lucky.
Her work is visceral, hallucinatory at times and from the passions and conflicts of being
born into a country where violence has caused her untellable strife. Her work will be read in Persian and translated by Stepehen Watts.

Shanta Acharya was born and educated in Orissa, India. In 1979 she won a scholarship
to Oxford, and completed her doctoral thesis in 1983. Between 1983-85 she was a Visiting Scholar, as well as a Teaching-cum-Research Assistant at Harvard University. She is currently Executive Director, Initiative on Foundation and Endowment Asset Management at London Business School. Her four books of poetry are Shringara (Shoestring Press, UK; 2006), Looking In, Looking Out (Headland Publications, UK; 2005), Numbering Our Days' Illusions (Rockingham Press, UK; 1995) and Not This, Not That (Rupa & Co, India; 1994). Jamika Ajalon is a charismatic American poetess, film director and long time Zenzile collaborator based in London. Anyone who has followed her work with Zenzile since the late nineties, will already be familiar with her phenomenal energy and sensual delivery, which has seen her dubbed "the female Tricky" and the "underground Grace Jones" by some reviewers. Born in St Louis Missouri, Jamika has lived in London for ten years.

The group, now known as Scream Blue Murmur, performed recently in Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, and at the Electric Picnic.
