Apples & Snakes and British Council presents SPEECHLESS
Thursday, 30 October
£8.50
Purcell Room, Southbank Centre
How free is free speech? Are there things that just can't be said? Enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is the right to freedom of opinion and expression but what does this mean in an age of anxiety and mistrust? Speechless brings together new poetry from five amazing writers from across South East Asia and four brilliant UK-based poets on the theme of freedom of expression in a unique new multi-lingual spoken word show. Incorporating different perspectives and experiences from Vietnam to Ireland and sexuality to slavery, Speechless will be a night that stimulates brain-tingling debate, covering issues that define our existence. The performance features: Priya K (Malaysia), Siege Malvar (Philippines), Liu Liang Yen (Taiwan), Da Thao Phuong (Vietnam) and UK artists Francesca Beard, Aoife Mannix and Jacob Sam-La Rose.
An Apples & Snakes and British Council production in association with English PEN Bookings: 0871 663 2500 / www.southbankcentre.co.uk

APPLES & SNAKES IN SOHO Featuring Brian Patten
Wednesday 29 October
8pm, £8 / £6
Soho Theatre
21 Dean St, London W1D 3NE
Poetry that speaks to all five senses.
Performance poetry owes an awful lot to Brian Patten: as one of theLiverpool Poets, he captured the zeitgeist of the 1960s and turned poetry into something quirky, invigorating and slightly dangerous. But rather than resting on former glories, he's tackled the subsequent decades head-on, tirelessly producing new material and establishing himself as one of the nation's foremost writers, both on the stage and between the book-covers. Tonight the great craftsman presents a selection of his masterworks.
Also on the bill will be Karen McCarthy , who carries that same flame of quirkiness in her poetry, plays and inspirational blogging. Don't miss your chance to hear the woman who "fizzes with intelligence, energy and linguistic invention" (New Statesman). Plus, kicking off the evening, there's PoetiCat , a forthright new spoken-word sensation, who has already garnered a five-star review at the Edinburgh Fringe and continues to wow allcomers. Jacob Sam-La Rose, a man with a well-chosen word for every occasion, will be your master of ceremonies.
Brought to you by Apples & Snakes - spanning the centuries with poetry www.applesandsnakes.org

Thirty years have passed since the UK's first dub poetry hit the racks, andits exponents are now amongst the elder statespeople of spoken-word. None more so than Jean ŒBinta' Breeze, who tonight demonstrates her command ofthose elusive rhythms and her ability to flit from street wisdom to historical fiction in the blink of an eye two talents showcased in her most recent book, The Fifth Figure.
There'll be ample support from Niall O'Sullivan, contributing his own brando f municipal zen with tales of greasy-spoon cafés and council flower-beds; and Saran Green, who'll be whipping up a saucy, spoken medley of boy-girl intrigue and Caribbean seasoning. Not only is Jackie Kay the author of several poetry collections and the acclaimed novel Trumpet, she's also something of a national treasure. Taking her adoptive upbringing and Scottish-Nigerian heritage as jumping-offpoints, her work probes the notoriously knotty topics of gender, race and identity. She was awarded an MBE for services to literature in 2006. Tonight, especially for you, she presents a choice platter of her finest poems. Plus contributions from Nick Drake chronicler of life's serio-comic moments, and past master ofthe stings-like-a-bee school of poetry. Roger Robinson finely-tuned storyteller with buckets of charisma and thelyrical sensibilities of a musician. Gloria Dawson newcomer who plays fast and loose with poetic form, invariably finding beauty in the ensuing chaos. Another Soho night with Apples & Snakes: the heart of poetry in the heart of the city.

Poetry and spoken word for the 21st century
Soho Theatre
Wednesday 28 May
8pm
A decade is a long time in performance poetry. Tonight we present one performer who's going from strength to strength after ten years in the business, another who's spent the last ten years carving a substantial niche for himself, and one talented newcomer with a promising poetic future in front of him. Add an international artist who's busy redefining the whole concept of spoken word, and we've got a crash course in the nation's favourite underground artform.
Featuring
Patience Agbabi tattooed poetry ambassador who has strutted her stuff everywhere from Eton College to Namibia; now promoting her new collection Bloodshot Monochrome.
Luke Wright Edinburgh Fringe institution, star of the hit theatre show Poet & Man, and the creative force behind Latitude Festival's stand-up poetry arena.
Keith Jarrett not the famous jazz muso, but a hotly-tipped and charismatic new face on London's poetry stages.

SECURITY
Written and performed by Zena Edwards
Set within the beating heart of London, the chaotic stories of five characters in crisis are exposed through the eye of a camera. What happens when one generation collides with another and cultural expectations clash? Does the flash of a blade in broad daylight mean the end or the beginning of security? Find out when age and youth battle as Palestine meets Peckham. This comical and moving tale of unexpected friendship confronts the issues of security and identity through a fusion of performance poetry, theatre, movement and song.
Security is a newly commissioned piece pioneering the crossover of performance poetry into theatre in the UK. As performer and writer, Zena Edwards, takes storytelling into the twenty-first century.
Zena Edwards is a mesmerizing performer of deeply lyrical, musical, streetwise poetry. The Verb - BBC Radio 3

TWO APPLES & SNAKES EVENTS THIS WEEK
APPLES & SNAKES IN SOHO
Cult poets and 21st-century ranters
Soho Theatre, 21 Dean St, W1
27 February 2008
8pm
Box office: 0870 429 6883
£8 / £6
An evening of skewed garage-poetry.
Novelist, singer, songwriter, painter and poet Billy Childish is one of those figures forever flitting around the peripheries of the public imagination. Tonight, in the wake of his recent spoken word CD Poems of a Backwater Visionary, he dredges some soulsick verse from the depths of the Medway Delta and demonstrates the power of his gloriously hard-to-pin-down mind.
Husky beat-survivor Fran Landesman and socially-sussed spitter Riz MC get the evening off to a storming start. And with the totally-wired compering of harmonica-toting William Stopha, this promises to be the sort of night that cults are made of.
PLUS!!!
DON'T SHUSH ME; Apples & Snakes in the library
Thurs 28 February @ 7.30pm
Bishopsgate Institute
London
£7 / £5
Box office: 020 7392 9220
They say that you can take the poet out of the library, but you can't take the library out of the poet. Or something. Tonight, though, five of our finest poets will be ricocheting their rhymes and baring their souls between the oak shelves of East London's foremost historical archive.
Featuring Jude Simpson - self-confessed streetwise spinster and perennial favourite
at the Edinburgh Fringe. Talking Tekla the Narrata - verbal tornado with a thousand shaggy-dog tales up his sleeve. Dave Bryant - aspirational Southend lyricist, tough on the outside, soft at the centre. Jasmine Cooray - insightful observer with a thought-provoking, socio-political stance. And with the avuncular compering of Patric Cunnane. We think you'll agree that there something for everyone here. And wine will
be served. If that helps to sway you.
