Oxford’s finest home-grown spoken word night is launching its very own brand of raucous, energetic and thought-provoking performance poetry in London with a showcase night on April 24 at Inn on the Green, Ladbroke Grove.
From its humble beginnings in the backroom of the now-legendary Brickworks in Oxford, Hammer & Tongue has become one of the highest-profile spoken word events in the UK, bringing together the best of the world’s live literature and providing a stage for some of the country’s best new artists.
In 2004 Hammer & Tongue established a monthly night in Brighton which has grown to attract international names and now holds a significant place on the European poetry circuit. With its London launch, Hammer & Tongue is hoping to give budding young poets the space to grow and develop their talents against a background of established names, inspiring others to get up on stage and take to the mic.
Hammer & Tongue hands out the power of judgement to poets peers with audience members invited to form the expert panel at the slam. If you want a chance to perform along Salina ‘Saliva’ Godden, (guest vocalist with Coldcut and Alabama 3), pastoral nihilist Johnny Fluffypunk and the stunning Sophia Blackwell, sign up for the open slam at the door from 7.30pm on the night, or to sign up for the slam in advance contact Michelle Madsen on 07809 236133 or at madsen.michelle@gmail.com
