"Commandments is Jackie Wills' fourth collection and within it she investigates religion, relationships and the mind. Her poems contain a cast as diverse as Fidel Castro, a teenage rapper, priest, adulterer, seamstress and girls in fairy wings on the Palace pier. Wills' poetry has always drawn on the surrealism of the everyday. This collection identifies crossing points where rules are broken, questioned or no longer make sense. According to Wills, these can happen at random, any time and anywhere in the world: digging the garden, watching impala on a scorched savannah or walking through the streets of Brighton. There's salsa, jazz, humour and passion in Commandments as Wills shows people at their most ludicrous and poignant."

Bloodaxe 'Changing Lives' Performances

As part of Bloodaxe's "broadmarket intiative" to encourage afficianados of other art forms to add poetry to their cultural portfolios, Jonathan Davidson and Midland Creative Projects Limited in association with Warwick Arts Centre and Bloodaxe Books present

CHANGING LIVES

Using some of the most powerful poetry published by Bloodaxe Books over the last thirty years, Changing Lives presents poetry as it should be experienced: full of wit, vitality and emotion. It is inspired by every aspect of our changing lives – from birth to death and all the glorious details between. And while there are moments of sadness, Changing Lives also provides comedy and thought provoking stories.

Changing Lives is performed as a theatre piece by a team of three actors and is directed by Steve Byrne, of Interplay Theatre, with Lizzie Wiggs, Associate Director. A haunting sound track, moving images and a stunning design are provided by Derek Nisbett and Janet Vaughan of Talking Birds. The poets whose work is featured include Jackie Kay, Helen Dunmore and David Constantine.

If you are new to poetry or a regular reader, Changing Lives will show why good poetry brilliantly performed is an experience like no other.

Poets Eleanor Rees (Andraste's Hair) and Melanie Challenger (Galatea) have both been nominated for this year's Forward Prize for Best First Collection, confirming the fast-growing reputation of Salt Publishing. Like Eleanor, Chris McCabe is a Salt poet and a Liverpudlian. His collection The Hutton Inquiry is a powerful examination of language under pressure. Musical refreshment is provided by Songdog, led by playwright Lyndon Morgan, in another strong lineup from Salt Margins.

Further bios:

ELEANOR REES
Born in Birkenhead in 1978, Eleanor Rees received an Eric Gregory Award in 2002. She lives in Liverpool where she works in the community as a poet. Andraste's Hair bridges the divide between performance, experimental and traditional poetries, drawing on myth, memory, folksong and murder ballad. Many of her poems are set in a mythical Liverpool, a city of metamorphosis and magic where boundaries are crossed in search of knowledge.
'an ambitious, experimental voice, vibrantly charged with the energy of city life': Carol Ann Duffy.

MELANIE CHALLENGER
Another recipient of an Eric Gregory Award, Melanie Challenger is current Artist in Residence for the British Antarctic Survey. She has adapted the Anne Frank diaries for an oratorio by James Whitbourn and is engaged in an ongoing collaboration with Bosnian war diarist Zlata Filipovic. In Galatea, Melanie casts a sensitive poet's eye across the hours of a tumultuous century to create startling poems whose voice both celebrates and mourns the tensions of human nature. She divides her time between Penzance and Brooklyn.
'no poetry in English since D.H. Lawrence's matches Challenger's controlled exuberance of form, diction, metric, and vision fused by Eros into authentic splendor': Harold Bloom

CHRIS MCCABE
Born in Liverpool in 1977, Chris McCabe works in the recently-reopened Poetry Library on London's South Bank. His debut book The Hutton Inquiry pushes the boundaries of British poetry, but with infectious wit and plenty of style. The central sequence concerns itself with the events of Summer 2003, leading up to the invasion of Iraq. The emphasis is on speed, association, guesswork, creating a mosaic from the fragmentation of political divide and rule.
'McCabe writes with the lower-case lightness of Tom Raworth and the northern comic realism of Simon Armitage': Jeremy Noel-Todd, The Guardian

SONGDOG
Led by playwright Lyndon Morgan, Songdog write dark, literate songs influenced by the likes of Beckett, Kafka and Leonard Cohen. Their third album The Time of Summer Lightning was released by One Little Indian Records. "And so we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past" - the closing lines of Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby - nail the brooding heart of this record perfectly, a dark and poignant collection of songs about dreams gone wrong, loves left behind, new lusts and old obsessions.

Sara Byrne was born in 1980 in Dublin, where she survived for 18 years before escaping, relatively unharmed to Galway. In 2003 she started to publish some of her poetry. In 2004 she co-founded the North Beach Nights Poetry Slam, which she hosted until relocating to London to pursue a glittering career in sandwich making. In this she has been very successful. In London she continues to read her work to whoever will listen. She is currently completing a BA in Creative Writing.

Edward Boyne is a poet and fiction writer. He has been short-listed for the Hennessy award in both poetry and fiction and for the Francis McManus short story competition. His work has been published in a variety of journals and anthologies. He read at the inaugural Cuirt Festival/Over The Edge showcase reading in April 2006. He lives in Galway.

Matthew Sweeney was born in Donegal, Ireland in 1952. He moved to London in 1973 and studied at the Polytechnic of North London and the University of Freiburg. His poetry collections include A Dream of Maps (1981), Blue Shoes (1989), Cacti (1992), and A Smell of Fish (2000). Selected Poems, representing the best of 10 books and 20 years' work, was published in 2002. He won a Cholmondeley Award in 1987 and an Arts Council Writers' Award in 1999. He has also published poetry for children. Matthew Sweeney has held residencies at the University of East Anglia and the South Bank Centre in London, and was Poet in Residence at the National Library for the Blind as part of the ‘Poetry Places’ scheme run by the Poetry Society in London. His latest poetry collections are Sanctuary (2004) and Black Moon (2007).

This reading will be preceded by the Galway-launch of the latest issue of the Limerick-based poetry magazine ‘Revival’.

There is no entrance fee. All welcome. For further information contact 087-6431748.
