GALWAY: John Walsh
Galway City Library
In a link up with the Academy of American Poets, Galway City Library is participating in a month long April-is-Poetry-Month project.
With the line "Do I dare disturb the Universe", from the famous T S Eliot poem The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, being chosen as a theme for this year's celebration, the poet and poet-performer from Derry, John Walsh, will perform the poem in full in Galway City Library. Prufrock has entranced many people and is regarded one of the finest pieces of poetry ever written.
John's performance of the poem will commence at 1.30pm.
John Walsh has had two collections of poetry, Johnny Tell Them and Love's Enterprise Zone, published by the Guildhall Press. He runs the successful performance poetry event North Beach Poetry Nights, which takes place monthly in The Crane Bar, and is he also the director of the new poetry press, Doire Press. His third collection of poetry is forthcoming from Salmon Poetry.

Launch of THE TERRORS by Tom Chivers, plus other marvels, this weekend
Join us on Sunday 29th March from 7pm for drinking games, petty chit-chat and readings by Tom Chivers, Tim Wells, Jane Holland, Jane Commane and James Wilkes , at The Market Trader, 50 Middlesex Street E1 7EX. Nearest Tube: Aldgate, Aldgate East, Liverpool Street.
The Terrors launch on Facebook
Find the venue
THE TERRORS by Tom Chivers is the first in a series of special edition pamphlets from Nine Arches Press; darkly-humoured e-dispatches of crime and punishment from over the walls and across centuries. The Terrors is a sequence of imagined emails; poetic missives from the start of the 21st century to inmates at London's notorious Newgate Prison. The emails introduce a cast of 18th century villains and their gruesome crimes: 'Half-hanged Smith'; executioner-turned-murderer Jack Ketch; the notorious Waltham Blacks.

LONDON: Apples & Snakes In Soho Featuring Bernardine Evaristo
Soho Theatre,
21 Dean Street,
London
W1D 3NE
Booking:0207 478 0100/ www.sohotheatre.com
Info: www.applesandsnakes.org
Critically-lauded writer Bernardine Evaristo specialises in blurring the line between prose and poetry. Her 2008 novel-in-prose, Blonde Roots, has been turning critics' heads with its all-too-real visualisation of a reversed slave-trade, all steeped in the author's trademark wit. Tonight she presents a genre-defying selection of her work.
And speaking of roots, we've also got drumtastic spoken-wordster HKB FiNN on the bill. Well-known for the 'alternative hip-hop' he cooks up from elements of jazzy Afro-reggae, he won almost universally rave reviews for his recent album Light in the Shade of Darkness. Come and see the man behind the music.
Denise Saul is no stranger to popular acclaim either: her White Narcissi collection was the Poetry Book Society's featured pamphlet in the winter of 2007. A virtuoso of subtle, well-crafted imagery, she's sure to go from strength to strength. Watch this space.
Bohdan Piasecki, meanwhile, is not yet a household name, though he should be soon. The man who introduced poetry slams to Poland, he's now gobsmacking audiences around the rest of Europe with his incisive, economical material and his personable onstage style.
In short, it's a night of poetic surprises – all of them pleasant, of course. Your host: Nick Makoha.
GALWAY: Over The Edge Open Reading
Galway City Library
Featured readers are Maureen Ryan, Dave Rock and Marck Beggs.
Maureen Ryan has lived most of her adult life in Galway. She has published two novels and over 400 academic papers, essays, sermons, meditations and reflections. She is a psychologist, a Priest in the Church of Ireland and a Canon in the National Cathedral of St. Patrick’s, Dublin. She recently gave up a well paid job as a religious columnist to make her fortune writing poetry. To that end she is taking classes with Susan Millar DuMars and Kevin Higgins. She is preparing a book for Columba Press and a collection of short stories titled ‘Marchpane Smiles’.
Dave Rock is a Scottish-Lithuanian-Irish-English something or other. He has been writing since he was seven years old. His work has been published in journals such as The Shop, Revival, Foiseach and The Old Yellow Lantern. He won the GYT/Bank of Ireland One Act Play Festival Best New Writing Award. He has been a featured reader at many different venues, including the Whitehouse, the Electric Picnic and Dun Laoghaire Festival of World Cultures. He is a former Auditor of the Writers Society of NUIG. His first collection of poetry is published soon by Maverick Press.
Marck Beggs is a professor and graduate dean at Henderson State University, Arkansas. When he is not writing poems or singing his quasi-folk songs, he can sometimes be found watching the weeds proliferate in his garden as he daydreams of fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, and butternut squash. Needless to say, he cites Whitman as a major influence. He is the author of Catastrophic Chords (Salmon, 2008), Libido Café (Salmon, 2004) and Godworm (1995). His folk-rock band, dog gods, released their debut CD in 2008 (www.cdbaby.com/doggodsmusic).
As usual there will be an open-mic after the Featured Readers have finished. New readers are always most welcome. The MC for the evening will be Susan Millar DuMars. For further details phone 087-6431748.

A spoken-word special from three festival favourites - Andy Craven-Griffiths, Excentral Tempest and Ventriloquist are three of THE names to drop whenever spoken-word is on the agenda. Maybe it's because of the trail of shredded-up festival stages they've been leaving in their wake just recently. But there's more to these three than just crowd-pleasing; each of them is currently developing a spoken-word theatre piece, and tonight we feature exciting excerpts from their three shows - Family Matters, GamePlay and The Lost Menagerie.
With Ventriloquist's hiphop-inflected soul-searching, the articulate swaggerof Andy's character-sketches, and the vocal bombardment as Tempest takes on Aesop, this'll be a night when you won't know quite what's hit you. But you'll like it! And compere Baden Prince Jr will be making sure of that.

"What happens when panic and desperation poison the well of life? This event, held in partnership with leading mental health organisations, features wonderful poetry which has the power to reveal to us the fragility of our own minds. Four fine contemporary poets will read and discuss their own and other poets' work around this theme."
Simon Barraclough's debut collection, Los Alamos Mon Amour, was short-listed for the Forward Prize. In his poetry and radio work he has often explored the mind's darker moments, with power and wit.
