Slam at Leominster: Friday 15th June

Poetry Slam at Leominster Library

On Friday 15th June at 8pm Leominster Library will be having its first ever Poetry Slam- a fast-paced, fun-filled performance poetry competition.

Leading UK slampresarios Marcus Moore and Sara-Jane Arbury host proceedings as a dozen diverse versifiers vie for the slam champ accolade. Random judges mark the quality of the writing, quality of performance and warmth of applaudience. Three three-minute rounds narrow the field and heighten the tempo. More tense than Tennyson, keener than Keats, huger than Hughes and, yes, poetry in Motion!

It will be an exhilarating exciting evening and will even appeal to teenagers and adults who think poetry isn't for them. Tickets are only £3 and include wine and soft drinks. For more info call Anne-Marie Dossett 01432 260646 or email amdossett@herefordshire.gov.uk

I posted up this Leominster Slam info ten hours ago and have only just noticed the GLARING error in the first sentence, which was the library 'will be having it's first ever Poetry Slam' etc. It's? It's?

No one will really be able to appreciate how much that sort of basic mistake ticks me off, not least when it's slipped through the net of my - usually careful - check-through before posting up material received from external sources.

'It' is a thing, not a person. It can't possess something and so cannot ever have an apostrophe to indicate possession. Jane's house, yes. It's first ever Slam, no. Its, its, its. The only time 'it' can have an apostrophe is when it's an abbreviation for IT IS, as previously in this sentence.

Godammit.
