NEW VENUE: The Slug & Lettuce,
Leamington Spa
As you know, each month we also invite a fabulous guest performance poet. Joining us this time is our very own, and highly amusing Dave Thomson.
MIRTH THROUGH VERSE
Dave has had a love of poetry since his schooldays in Potters Bar, Hertfordshire…although back then P.B. was in Middlesex. He has only been writing verse for three years, following a chance encounter with Sarah Duran in Tesco Express, Dorridge. He already knew Sarah through dancing. He was encouraged to come along to PGR Leamington in May 2007 as an audience member. A month later he was back at PGR reading his first two poems. Any complaints about him or his poems should be taken up with Sarah at Tesco…she usually starts her shift on the check out or shelf stacking at around 1530 hrs.
Since February 2009 Dave has performed his poetry at Kidderminster Town Hall and other venues during solo spots at Kidderminster Male Choir Concerts, for several retirement groups, Rotary and Probus clubs. He enjoys performing as a ‘tongue in cheek’ grumpy old man - particularly to audiences of a certain age. He has a fan group in Bromsgrove of grey, white and blue haired old ladies.
Dave left school at 15 to join the Army and travelled the world as a soldier for 13 years. He then spent a couple of years as a merchant seaman. He lived in Australia for 20 years, including 5 years in The Australian Army. Still unsettled, Dave now faces the dilemma of nearing retirement whilst still not knowing what he wants to be when he grows up!
As well as poetry, Dave loves singing as a bass in The Kidderminster Male Choir. He also enjoys Ceroc (modern jive) or just a good old boogie. Other interests include exploring the countryside of Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Shropshire, together with reading and comedy.
