LONDON: Hammer and Tongue
Green Note Cafe
106 Parkway
NW1 7AN
London
The unremitting misery of January banished, Hammer and Tongue warmly welcomes you to February's London night of depravity, top flight poetry and obscure foodstuffs at Camden's warmest, cosiest drinking den, the Green Note Cafe. Shipped in from the far antipodes, Australia's favourite performance poet and Nimbim World Cup winner Tug Dumbly will be doling out his very unique brand of macabre storytelling and ably supported by Brighton's poetry brothel keeper, Chris Parkinson.
The first eight lithe, primed poets to sign up for the slam get in for free and the winner will go on to compete in the London Hammer and Tongue slam final later in the Spring. Our London champion will be pitted against the nation's finest, with the winner going to to perform with us at Glastonbury, and many an exciting place on top of that.

LONDON: Utter! Heartbreak Valentine's / Plath Day Special
Green Note Club,
106 Camden Parkway
NW1 7AN
Transport: Camden Town tube, Camden road / Euston overland
All the featured spoken word artistes will be reading both works of their own on heartbreak and delivering some of the work of our Sylvia. They include:
Julia Bird: Previous ajar mic contest winner with a wonderful book, Hannah and the Monk, out with Salt. Her life is a cage, but on stage she's free.
James Kettle: He's had shows on BBC Radios 4 and 7, regularly headlines massive comedy clubs and deputy edits The Fix magazine. His subjects are suburban goth librarians and Tony Slattery, and you can't get any more heartbreak than that really, can you?
Annie Brechin: Published in The Wolf, The Delinquent, Rising and basically everywhere, being lovelorn has never seemed so glamorous. Why she doesn't have a book out yet we don't know.
Vinnie Gibbons: Winner of November's ajar mic contest, a bastard attack poet penning
material about power struggles in the animal kingdom and the plight of dubstep hedgehogs.
PLUS
The Utter! Writing Group themselves with heartbroken writings produced at the group...
PLUS
A dramatic JG Ballard-esque reenactment of the death of Sylvia Plath starring Richard Tyrone-Jones as Ted Hughes and Robert Yates as Elizabeth Taylor! With puppets.
The legendary AJAR MIC CONTEST: Rob Autton, Rowyda Amin, Amy Blakemore, and John Stiles reading from his novel Taking the Stairs. YOU vote to decide who wins a full paid slot at Utter! Bringing all your mates along to vote for you is positively welcomed, by the way.

APPLES & SNAKES IN SOHO - Poetry, patois and poignancy
Whoop and shout! Poetry's patois queen Valerie Bloom will be taking us on a verbal voyage through her hard-hitting, poignant, exuberant back-catalogue. A cornerstone of British Caribbean poetry – and recognised as such on last year's Honours List – Val is also respected as an educator, broadcaster and author. Her most recent novel for teenagers, The Tribe, was
published by Macmillan in 2007.
Ensuring extra words-for-money, there's Kayo Chingonyi, the man with the smoothest voice in poetry (and his writing's not bad either). Kayo weighs each vowel and syllable as if it's a thing of beauty – which it is, even when the words themselves are breaking your heart. He's guaranteed, in his own words, to take you to the crest of each sonic wave.
Meanwhile, straight outta the south-west, comes Rose Cook. A legend in Devon, where radio stations, theatres and cathedral vaults have all rung with the sound of her poetry, Rose is a firm believer in the soothing power of the spoken word. Tonight she storms the capital (in a soothing way).
And finally, we have newcomer Jahnell: with rhythms that seem to echo the industrial skylines of his native North, and tales of what it means to be of mixed heritage in the early 21st century, he's been bowling audiences over at recent shows. Get yourselves here, and see what the fuss is about.
Online poetry chronicler Naomi Woddis puts down the notebook and takes up the mic to steer us through tonight's wordy wonders.

Kat's Big Night Out - Poetry firing on all five cylinders
They say that a new year is like a poetry show: you crave new thrills, but still appreciate a bit of familiarity. That's why we've prepared a mouth-watering medley of old favourites and fresh poetic pizzazz for you. Kat Francois – a colossus of the poetry scene both at home and internationally – is a woman who can ricochet from hilarious to heart-rending within the space of a single stanza. And if you've seen her one-woman show Seven Times Me, you'll know she's a great mover too. What better person to introduce you to the wide-ranging and towering talents of:
Serenah Cole – endearingly soulful cynic, flying the flag for Leicester's flourishing poetry scene;
Under da POETree – two socially astute dudes with an almost telepathic onstage rapport;
Simon Mole – pent-up ball of thinking-man's hip-hop, streetwise storytelling and good-bloke vibes;
Hollie McNish – Scots lass with a CV full of slam titles and a style as sharp as a dram of whisky.
If your new year's resolution's to see more poetry gigs, begin with this one. It could be the start of a beautiful new habit. A gift from Apples & Snakes – on a mission to spread the poetic love around the UK.
